Salt Lake City Utah-The murder of 6-year-old Rosie Tapia remains one of the most heartbreaking and widely recognized unsolved cases in Utah history.

Nearly three decades after she was abducted from her family’s Salt Lake City apartment, investigators continue searching for the person responsible.

Rosie Tapia disappeared during the early morning hours of Sunday, August 13, 1995. She had gone to bed the night before with her siblings at the family’s apartment.

When Did It Happen?

Rosie Tapia disappeared during the early morning hours of Sunday, August 13, 1995. She had gone to bed the night before with her siblings at the family’s apartment.

Sometime between late Saturday night and the early hours of Sunday morning, an unknown person entered the apartment and took Rosie while the rest of the family slept.

Where Did It Happen?

The kidnapping occurred at the Tapia family’s apartment in the Glendale neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah, on the city’s west side.

Later that morning, Rosie’s body was found in an irrigation canal near 1200 West and 500 South, less than a mile from her home. The discovery devastated the community and immediately launched one of the largest homicide investigations in Utah history.

What Happened?

According to investigators, Rosie had been asleep in the bedroom she shared with her siblings when someone entered the apartment. Remarkably, none of the other children woke up during the abduction.

When Rosie’s parents realized she was missing, they called police, prompting an urgent neighborhood search involving officers, volunteers, and family members.

Only hours later, searchers located Rosie’s body in the canal. The medical examiner determined she had been sexually assaulted and murdered.

Because of the nature of the crime, detectives believed the abductor likely acted quickly and had a specific target.

The Investigation

The Salt Lake City Police Department, assisted by state and federal investigators, launched an extensive investigation.

Over the years, detectives:

  • Conducted thousands of interviews.
  • Collected and analyzed DNA evidence.
  • Followed hundreds of leads and tips.
  • Investigated numerous persons of interest.
  • Re-examined evidence as forensic technology improved.

Despite decades of work, no suspect has been arrested.

Investigators have never publicly identified a primary suspect and have withheld certain details about the evidence to preserve the integrity of the case.

DNA Evidence

Authorities have confirmed that biological evidence was collected during the investigation.

As DNA science has advanced, detectives have repeatedly re-tested evidence using newer technologies. Officials have expressed hope that continued advancements—including forensic genealogy—may eventually identify the killer.

Rosie’s Legacy

Rosie’s murder had a lasting impact on Utah.

Public attention surrounding the case led to the passage of Rosie’s Law, legislation that strengthened the review process for cold homicide cases and helped establish Utah’s statewide cold case system.

Today, investigators continue to review the case periodically, believing it can still be solved.

A Case That Still Awaits Justice

Nearly 31 years after Rosie Tapia was taken from her family’s home, the investigation remains active. Detectives continue to encourage anyone with information—no matter how small—to come forward.

For Rosie’s family, justice has never stopped being the goal. While time has passed, investigators remain hopeful that new evidence or a long-overdue tip will finally reveal who entered that apartment on an August night in 1995 and forever changed a family’s life.
